PANEL: FUTURE OF ICCAD: TEENAGE YEARS

Moderator: Daniel D. Gajski - Univ. of California, Irvine, CA ICCAD started more than 12 years ago as a conference for the CAD professionals faced with automating the tasks of integrated circuit design. In many instances, the problems to be solved were well defined. The focus in ICCAD for the last 12 years has largely been on the detailed algorithms required to solve these difficult problems. This has lead to high degree of specialization. Exponential growth in ASIC capacity and performance threatens to obsolete many of the old design problems. This is further complicated by the industry's move toward total product design including manufacturing. This means that future research must address not only algorithms and point tools but also complex CAD systems, frameworks, and study of design and manufacturing processes. Similarly, CAD professionals will need education in product design as well as understanding essential issues on every step from conceptualization to manufacturing. These trends will also impact the conference itself in terms of redefining research contributions, paper writing and presentations, conference formats and goals, etc. Are we ready to accept this transformation? Several experts from the CAD community will address the past, present and future of ICCAD and give their vision for ICCAD in the 21st Century.
